I've had a Windows update flag displaying in my systray for months, I've been ignoring it because I don't know what will happen if I click it. It could give Windows-10 my full permission to nullify all my "kill Win-10" settings.

Susa, have you downloaded any new Win-7 updates in the past few months?
Do you remember the date of Win-7's end of lifecycle and the end of MS support? I'd like to get the last few Win-7 updates especially security updates.

Well, I can do a window search for updates and see what comes up.
This is where your posted list of KB's to avoid will come in handy, thanks for posting them.

Microsoft doesn't plan to stop fixing security problems in Windows 7 until extended support ends. That's January 14, 2020--five years and a day from the end of mainstream support.

I have downloaded all Windows 7 updates, except KB3035583. After I read that list above, I hunted my computers for the above updates and found 2 of them. I uninstalled them and hid them.

Thanks for that info, I guess I had better click that update flag in my tray but I'll have to be real careful about not downloading anything Win-10. It might be a good idea to run Aegis again afterward.

I'm shutting down this pc now to start getting ready to go get my new teeth.

After coming home today I clicked that Windows update flag; my setting that said "Let me decide what to update" was still working.

MS showed me 43 important security updates dated back to January. I left the optional updates alone. I did set a Restore Point before downloading/installing.

{b]Susa, I found only 3 bad updates from your KB list, they were in the optional download list.

Here they are:

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2952664) 4.6 MB *Recommended
And-
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2952664) 4.6 MB Optional

HG, I'm sorry but that is darned ridiculous!
I would be ranting and raving and demanding some of my money back! emoticon
AND I would be online giving them a POOR rating so that no one else would use them! emoticon

I've been seeing a Windows pop-up coming from the white flag in my sys tray, it says "Important security update." I finally clicked it and it was the Windows Defender security definitions up date so I D/L'd and installed them. Defender gets up dated on Tuesdays. No problems so far. The opitionals are piling up, I have 20 that I'm ignoring now.

My Firefox crashes when Adobe Flash gets the hick-ups. LOL

I just recently disabled Windows Defender. I was getting tired of the dozens of updates and figured I don't need it anyway since I have Avast. At least, when there is a Windows Defender update, you don't have to restart the computer.

Windows has started trying to force these updates on us again.

Last time I got KB2952664 (Win 7 only) as a recommended update, again. Tonight I got the same one as an important update. I hid it both times. I wonder what they are up to.

Re: Windows updates to avoid, to keep Windows 7

quote:

Windows 7 is in “extended support” until January 14th, 2020, while Windows 8 support ends in January 10th, 2023. Intel Skylake (6th gen Core) devices on the supported list will hang onto Windows 7 and 8 until July 17th, 2017. According to Microsoft, “After July 2017, the most critical Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 security updates will be addressed for these configurations, and will be released if the update does not risk the reliability or compatibility of the Windows 7/8.1 platform on other devices.” Support for Windows Vista will come to an end on April 11th, because, in Redmond's words “your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.” Overall, Microsoft encourages users to update to Windows 10 before support ends for its previous generation operating systems. Unfortunately, for many that haven't made the jump to Windows 10 yet, time is running out and Microsoft may well be forcing the issue sooner rather than later.

That is to bad! I know many people who did not switch because many of their programs and things like printers, etc. Do not work with Win. 10.
I was able to switch, as I don't have many programs, those I have worked. AND I'm not connected to any printers and such.

It is very frustrating. I know that someday I will switch, but right now I don't want to give up my Paint Shop Pro. I have also decided to keep my laptop on 7 so that I only use one version. I figure that by the time support runs out then the machines will be dead, too.

I don't blame you. I am still using Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006 Edition. I have updated and patched that thing, since 2006. Only one function does not work with Win 10. But it is not something I use.
