Starlings - A murmeration of starlings landed on my porch this morning. Is this a sign of spring? I never have this many at once. They were all over.

They are definitely not pigeons!

Similar Species
Mourning Doves are the common small dove across most of the continent. They're smaller, longer-tailed, and much lighter colored than Rock and Band-tailed pigeons.

]Information HERE

Rock Pigeons (Columba livia) are what we commonly call pigeons. Mourning Doves (Zenaida macroura) are lovely. Yeah. They are related.

Yes, Susa, that is a gorgeous picture.

I used to scatter seed for the mourning doves here and had quite a flock showing up. Then one day I saw a hawk swoop down and snatch one up. That was the end of my feeding them.

I have had hawks here, but I have not seen a hawk get one at the feeder. I did have a hawk who was aiming for the feeder smash into my sliding glass doors. The little bird got away.
