When security products make systems less secure

I allowed Avast to put it's "SafeZone" icon in my Firefox toolbar. I ran it for awhile then I removed it.

There has been an increase in reports of security products recently which make user systems less secure when they are installed, used or even just present on the system.

Many antivirus companies have added tools and products to their security programs in recent years to increase the perceived value of the product, add new features to them that users may find useful, and to add new revenue opportunities in form of custom search deals.

It is quite common for instance that companies deploy browser extensions on systems that change the search provider, new tab page or home page. Others have created custom versions of the Chromium browser to improve user security while the browser is being used, often calling these custom browsers secure or safe to indicate that.

Google started to analyze browser extensions and custom browsers recently and the results are quite disturbing.

The three custom Chromium-based browsers the company analyzed were found to weaken security instead of improving it.

The latest company that Google contacted about security issues found in their products is Avast. The company's SafeZone browser, based on Chromium, allowed attackers to read any file on the system by getting users to click on links.

I removed that extension, too! I am glad I did.

Are you aware that Chromium and Chrome are not the same thing?

I found that out a few months ago when some download installed Chromium. It was rather hard to get rid of at the time.

Yes, I've read about Chromium but I never installed it.
Note: You must uninstall every little bit of programs like this one, including the preferences folder.

I did try Google Canary (developer build) and uninstalled it too.

]Revo Uninstaller is still my favorite.

Scroll down to the second offer.

I did uninstall all the little bits of it. I usually use CCleaner to uninstall things. They hunt down more than just the program itself and gets most or all of the bits. However, I forget what all I did with Chromium. It was more than that. I think I used Adware Cleaner to get the rest of it.

Luckily I rarely download apps or extensions from anything. I have one from Firefox.. and thanks to SUSA I added WOT to my computer.
But non of those others that you mentioned.

I don't download apps or extensions, either much. I have WOT and a temperature converter and an ad blocker. I think that is it.
