Convert old computers to Chromebook?

quote:

It all started last week, when I went to look at my mom's Windows XP system and figure out how to get her onto a more current operating system. My main concern was Google's pending end-of-support date for Chrome on XP. After much consideration, I decided the best path was to "upgrade" by buying a $140 Chromebox and moving my mom into the fluffy-light land o' Chrome OS.

After I wrote about that family tech support adventure, several people asked why I didn't instead turn to CloudReady. CloudReady, if you haven't heard of it (and if you don't follow tech news like a hawk, there's a good chance you haven't) is a new-ish service that lets you convert old computers into cloud-centric Chromebook-like systems. It's provided free of charge to individual users by a company called Neverware.

And you know what? It's actually a really interesting idea. In short, Neverware takes Google's Chromium OS -- the open-source bedrock that serves as the basis for all Chrome OS devices -- and makes it something you can easily install and run on any old computer. The computer doesn't technically become a "Chromebook," as that's a trademarked name for official Chrome OS products released with Google's direct involvement, but it's extremely similar in both form and function.

]How to do that HERE

Well, the researching and reading lots of info to find out if one of my laptop pc's would work with that Neverware setup cost me 2 hours of wasted time. emoticon

Thinking; should I kill my best and latest Win-7 with an Intel i7 core laptop? NO WAY! By the way, my new desktop HP pc has an Intel i3 core, which is much weaker that the Intel i7.

What about my dual boot Win-XP/Ubuntu? NOPE, too valuable and besides it has my detailed personal finance records entered into the very old MS Money program, circa 2003.

My last option is my Asus EEEPC 8 GB. It only has 8 GB SSD HDD but I squeezed Ubuntu in it and now there's no more room because of all the updates. The system runs well but I was thinking about going back to the original OS, a heavily modified version of Ubuntu. It's not compatible anyway.

I have considered everything and wasted 2 hours. emoticon

 emoticon , HG!

I was thinking about this for your XP computer and was why I posted it. I thought it looked like a good idea for older computers. However your MS Money program is a good reason not to do it.

I recycled my old Vista laptop to my grandson. All I have left are Windows 7s.

Great idea to recycle that old funky Vista laptop to your GS, he was probably thrilled to get it for free. Now he only needs an iso backup copy of Win-7 to upgrade it. emoticon

I've never used Vista but I see a few goofy remnants of it in my Win-7. emoticon

That Vista machine never bothered me, I think because I don't do much on my laptops except go online. My grandson was thrilled! A year ago, I bought him a new laptop for Christmas. He is going to be a computer geek. His father is.
