Never10 vs GWX Control Panel

quote:

Earlier this week, longtime PC guru Steve Gibson released a free application that blocks the Windows 10 upgrade on Windows 7 and 8.1 systems. Dubbed Never10, Gibson's product reaches into the registry and uses the blocks documented in Microsoft's Knowledge Base article 3080351 to "disable Windows' pestering insistence upon upgrading Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10."

Many of you have written to me and asked how Never10 compares to GWX Control Panel, a free program with similar intent that Josh Mayfield has been distributing since last August.

[ Your one-stop shop for Microsoft knowledge: Everything you need to know about Windows 10, in a handy PDF. Download it today! | Survive and thrive with the new OS: The ultimate Windows 10 survivor kit. | Stay up on key Microsoft technologies with the Windows newsletter. ]
I've written about Gibson's products and test sites in many of my books. He has a decades-long reputation for turning out reliable, solid, no-nonsense software. Mayfield knows the Get Windows 10 nagware inside out. Back in January, Mayfield analyzed the descriptions in KB 3080351 and found several errors in Microsoft's documentation, which Microsoft subsequently fixed.

I set up several VMs and tested the two products side by side. Here's what I found.

I won't bother getting Never10 because it's the same as GWX but GWX goes a little deeper to find more Win10 junk dropped in our laps and I like the GWX Monitor.

Btw, I've updated my GWX to the latest version [sign in to see URL], it now has a very bland looking, no nonsense interface. I love it. emoticon

I just did the Never10, because it looked simpler. I installed it and a square popped up that Windows 10 was enabled on my computer and do I wish to disable it. I clicked "Yes!" and blip, it was done. Idiot proof. If I change my mind I just flip it back.

I had never tried GWX because it looked like I could mess it up. I am going to put Never10 on my notebook, too.

I've been running Windows 10 since it came out. And this last week, I tried to use it for the first time with my old scanner. And it worked perfectly. I've used it for all my cameras and their software and downloading [sign in to see URL] iphone and ipod and ITunes are working perfectly as well. So I guess I'm good! emoticon

Good! I am very glad that everything works for you on it. My only hold up with software is PaintShopPro. My version is only supposed to be usable through Windows XP, but when I got this computer the computer guys at the store told me how to make it work with this computer on Windows 7 Pro.

I would not like the ads on 10, either, but I know those can be gotten rid of.

Since I am happy with 7 Pro, I am going to stick with it. I figure it will last beyond the computers I presently have and then I will learn 10. I may need your help then.

Queeny, if you are happy with Windows 10 then that's all that matters. I'm glad you're satisfied.

That does not look so hard. I don't remember why I thought it would be. If the other program doesn't work, I will do this one.

Re: Never10 vs GWX Control Panel

The only program I was worried about was my Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006 [sign in to see URL] is what I use for my photos, cropping, etc.
When I ended up with [sign in to see URL] had to reload the 2006 as it would not work at first. And I lost a couple of features at that time. Not ones I really miss. But so far every "Windows" updates it's kept [sign in to see URL] though it's 10 years old now.. emoticon
